At home, I remember once having a boot thrown at my head, sometimes being hit with a bible or other publication because my mother was always sitting at the kitchen with a cup of tea doing study. Other times, for reasons I can't remember presently, I remember my mother threatening to go and get the biggest stick or tree branch she could find in the back yard to beat me with.

One of the things I remember about central South Australia is flies...lots and lots and lots of flies! (crawling into our ears and eyes and noses and mouths, swatting them with tracts and magazines to no avail)
I also remember the drive home from one trip to isolated territory, our carload was going south, two buses were going north, then a massive 4-wheel-drive overtook the busses. We had the buses pass about an inch away on one side of us and the fwd pass about an inch away on the other side. One of the women in the car said that she had this picture go through her mind of there being nothing left except someone's shoe sitting in the middle of the road. I think the bloke who was driving just about shat himself, he disappeared into the bush for a while after that and I think the rest of us just sat in the car in shock.

My mother and I had to move congregations when I was in my teens. In the new congregation (we arrived in August) she met a man who was about 20 years older than her who supposedly had a good reputation in the congregation. She had never met him before. I know she had felt lonely at times and probably inferior because most of the jw women she knew were married and she kept hearing the bs that children had to have two parents. She was engaged to this man by November and they were married by the following May. Within a couple of months it was clear that she regreted the marriage and that she really didn't know him at all.
My mother is someone who considers herself to have a close relationship with "jehovah", but she never seems to be honestly happy. Oh yeah, she gets manic about conventions and stuff like that, but that's not the same as happy.
Now she is stuck with this arsehole who she is not allowed to leave even though there is no feeling between them and he yells at her and hits her.
He tried being aggressive towards me, once, but he got the same right back and then I walked out, never to return.
Their wedding had already been one of the big turning points for me in realising what the cult was really like. I had been to a few jw weddings when I was quite young, but this one was the first where I had really listened to the marriage vows. What stood out to me was that the man was to "love and cherish" his wife, but the woman had to "love and cherish and deeply respect" her husband.

I had to go into hospital for surgery when I was about 19 years old. (I had already left the jws by this time.) My mother was present at the time that my admition forms were being done. I am vision impaired, so someone had to fill out the forms for me. Fortunately a nurse was in the room at the time, because my mother was trying to put on the forms that I would not accept a blood transfusion if the issue came up. In the end, the nurse and I both had to ask my mother to leave the room, and the nurse completed the forms for me with the answers I requested.
It is quite likely that if noone else was present, my mother would have filled out the forms according to her cult without even telling me what was on the form.

convinced 95% of all active jw's don't have a clue as to where 1914 originates
by goingthruthemotions inso talking with my wife last night...i was explaining to her about a conversation i had with a person at work about end times.
he has a strange belief that some scriptures in isaiah perdict something huge is going to happen in september of 2015. she then states that no one can predict the future only the father knows and he is in a cult.
lol on the inside.. i then stated "what about 1914 and the dubs perdiction and what it means today" she said no there was never any predictions.

"GTTM: She said " i believe were in end times and to serve Jehovah and have a relationship with Jesus""
Hang on, I thought she'd just said "no there were never any predictions", so how can she believe it's "end times". They're so programmed that they don't even seem to be aware of contradictions.
"Focus: It also marked not the beginning, but "the very end of the time of troubles"."
What? So Armageddon's been and gone, and noone's noticed? I still don't get the whole 100 years of god's kingdom rule thing. Is the start of god's kingdom and the "great tribulation supposed to happen at the same time? I used to be able to parrot most of the prophecy bs when I was a kid.
"OneEyedJoe: The current teaching of how they get to 1914 is somewhat more known, but still only by a small minority."
Do they actually explain how they calculate the seven times crap? I seem to remember being able to do the maths for some of the prophecies when I was a kid, but not any of how it was supposed to work."ADCMS: 99.9% of JWs also are completely oblivious to the fact that the 1914 date and its chronology wasn't even invented by Russell. At best, he plagarized the entire concept from the Adventists and William Miller and stapled the WT label on it."
I don't think I ever knew that, but it's so like them to do something like that."BluesBrother: Their massaging of an embarrasing start to their organization reminds one of Winston Smith's job in "1984". He had to look back at old newspapers on record and change them to say what The State was now promoting as "truth""
I've just finished reading "1984" and all the way through the book I kept being reminded of the jw cult. -

I'm sure my mother would tell anyone that all she ever did was give me a "smack" when I "needed it", but I remember having more than one wooden spoon broken on my arse. She used to keep a wooden spoon in the glove box of the car and then replace it when it got broken.
Perhaps what Londo said about being discrete is the reason why all the beatings happened in the "mothers and babies" room at the hall I grew up in.
"cultBgone: I was tempted to say they dragged their kids, but of course that would have looked bad to any visitors."
I remember some kids being dragged, some being marched, some being half dragged and half carried (usually with a hand over their mouth to muffle the screaming). A few didn't scream though, because they were too terrified to make a sound.

Yeah, what Crazyguy said, or do what my mother seems to do about everything--pray, sit down and open the bible, then start looking for an answer from whatever page the bible opened at because the holy spirit must have made it open at that page.
